Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from Sisterhood Redefined! We have some very exciting news for you today - starting tomorrow, we will be opening up applications for new staff writers! Applications will be open from November 1 until November 30. Results will be announced on December 15. Keep a look out on our Facebook tomorrow for the application! We would love for you all to apply to join our team. If you have any questions concerning what a staff writer does, please email our head of recruitment at bethj.sr@gmail.com or sisterhoodredefined@gmail.com.

We hope you stay safe this Halloween - here are some tips from our staff on the most important things to remember tonight.

1. Drink water. No matter what else you are drinking, stay hydrated!
2. Don't wear all black. All black makes you hard to see at night so avoid it especially if you are going to be walking around in dark areas without much light.
3. Travel in groups. The ever classic rule of thumb is to pick a buddy and to not lose her no matter what is going on.
4. Have fun! It is one of the best holidays of the year! You get to dress up and eat all the candy you want without being judged so enjoy it!

Philanthropy Spotlight: Delta Phi Epsilon's ANAD Week

One of my favorite events that my sorority hosts each year is a week to bring awareness to ANAD - the National Association of  Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders. Every Fall, the sisters of the Gamma Omicron chapter of DPhiE plans a week that essentially promotes positive body image and self-worth.

The week's activities include No Make Monday, Trashing Your Insecurities, Zumba, a fashion  show and a candle light vigil. In one event, Scale Smashing, students from the Georgia Southern campus were invited to write inspirational quotes and phrases on scales and then take sledge hammers to destroy the scale.

I hope that you all remember that regardless of your body shape, hair color, weight or age that you are all beautiful! I invite you all to take a look into ANAD and even print out your own copy of the ANAD pledge to put next to your mirror!

Let me know what your favorite philanthropy events are in the comments!

Cute and Fun Ways to Wear Your Letters

Being in a sorority it is inevitable that you will be wearing your letters the majority of your time. While it is comfy to throw on a t-shirt with a pair of norts and chacos and head to class, sometimes it is nice to dress up and show off your letters in a higher fashion way.

A cute casual way to show off your letters is with a pair of skinny jeans and boots. You will be just as comfortable as if you were wearing leggings or norts but will look 100% more put together.

If you live in an area where it isn't quite cool enough to commit to jeans and boots, you can simply grab a pair of cute shorts and tuck your letters in. Adding a belt will complete the look and you will look good while staying casual and comfy

For a slightly less casual look, add a sleek pair of skinny pants and pumps with your letters. By wearing black on black a simple t-shirt will look high class and fancy.

A skirt, boots, and a belt are the perfect items to match with your letters if you are heading to a philanthropy concert or any outdoor event. You will look cute without going overboard and still be able to show off your sorority.

Beyond the Leggings

No one warned me that joining a sorority would mean that my entire wardrobe would double from t-shirts alone. I have so many sorority t-shirts that I have to devote an entire drawer exclusively to them. The problem with having this many t-shirts, though, is that I tend to get into and leggings and t-shirt rut mid-way through the semester. It’s an easy go-to outfit and the shirts are just so cute I can’t bear to not wear them. If you’re anything like me, you’re dying to step up your wardrobe. Here are a few tips on how to wear your plethora of sorority t-shirts in a new way.

Add a skirt…
Skirts are just as easy to put on as a pair of leggings. By tucking your latest philanthropy shirt into a cute skirt, you are showing the entire world that you’re proud of your sorority and that you can actually look like a put together adult. As the weather gets colder, opt for wool skirts and/or tights. Pick a skirt that fits your style, whether that is a classic black skirt or a more funky floral skirt. If you’re really feeling ambitious, go ahead and add a statement necklace.

Funky Skirt
Layer under a jacket…
It’s easy to throw on a sweatshirt of a fleece, but why not elevate your style a little bit. Adding a cool leather jacket or a cozy sweater is the perfect wardrobe decision in the fall. Cardigans can class up your favorite new bid day shirt, especially when paired with a bright pair of pants or well-fitting jeans.

Cozy Sweater
Buy something new…

If you’re looking to buy some new sorority apparel, you’ll be surprised by how many unique options there are these days. Why buy another boring t-shirt when you can have a vest, a button down, or even a cute tote bag. You can add your letters to almost anything these days. Get creative! Watch heads turn when you walk into chapter with your brand new cardigan embroidered with your sorority crest.

5 Easy Fall Apartment Decor Ideas

Fall is upon us and it's time for our homes to slowly become a little more orange, yellow, and red as we wave goodbye to summer and hello to fall. I have gathered five easy crafts to get your home in the spirit of fall. I can't wait to try these crafts out myself because we all need a touch of fall. Click each title to get an in depth look at how to make each craft.

1. DIY Leaf Mason Jars

This craft requires a lot of things that are already sorority craft essentials: mod podge, sponge brushes, and mason jars. It's easy to go to a dollar store and grab some fake leaves or go outside and get real fall leaves depending on your preference. These mason jars look wonderful and seem like the perfect way to add a little bit of light to a room if you go the candle route.

Pumpkin carving is a thing of the past. Actually cleaning out your pumpkin and carving it can be a total mess to do so instead the best thing to do would be painting it. This tutorial shows you how to make the most adorable pumpkin that includes your last initial monogram and lots of glitter. I don't know about you, but those are some of my favorite things.

There is just something about candy corn that speaks autmn and Halloween. These adorable candy corn pieces would look great on a dinner table, or on your desk. These lovely candy corn decor pieces are there to remind you to take sometime out and enjoy the sweetness of the season.

There is just something special about fall and popcorn. In the fall I love to eat popcorn balls and caramel popcorn. This decor item looks so easy to make and it requires very few dollars. By using the link above the blogger who gives the tutorial shows how she did this project for just about $6!

Last, but certainly not least in this set of fall apartment decor ideas is this adorable wine bottle upcycle. I am in love with how effortless this blogger makes the tutorial. This is such an adorable project that is easy to finish in a weekend, but it will make any part of your apartment a million times more fall themed. You can use other color paints if you wish on this and this craft would be great throughout the year with different words.

I hope you enjoyed the crafts I shared today. These look amazing and simple to do. Get out there and unless the inner crafty person in you!

5 Delicious Halloween Treats

I don't know about you, but for me Halloween is one of those times where I put my diet aside and indulge in a month of creepy and spooky treats. I love spending time in the kitchen creating neat and fun treats to share with all of my friends on Halloween and they love me for doing so! I have compiled a list of the top treats I plan to make this year for Halloween, but I would also love to know what you plan on creating! (share below in the comments!)

  • Pumpkin Pretzels

Chocolate covered anything is my favorite and these pretzels are no exception! Plus they look adorable and will definitely be a hit with your friends.

  • Halloween Muddy Buddy

I never, never, never turn down the opportunity to eat Muddy Buddy (or puppy chow as we call it in the South)! Though I have never attempted to make it, this recipe seems to be easy enough for me to follow along!

  • Gooey Monster Eye Cookies

I am a sucker for monsters! My freshman year roommate has a huge obsession with Mike from Monsters Inc. so everything I see something slightly resembling Mike, I have to share it with her! I think these cookies are perfect for all the monster lovers out there!

  • Witch Hat Cupcakes

Coming from the girl that has an entire Pinterest board dedicated to cupcakes, believe me when I say these are the cutest things ever! I am nearly 100% positive that when I attempt to make these, they will look nothing like the above picture but I will definitely be giving it my best shot!

  • Rice Krispie Pumpkin Balls

I can not get over how simple and easy these pumpkin balls are to make! My mouth is literally watering at the thought of chowing down on one of these lovely little snacks and I am positive that all my friends will enjoy them for Halloween as well!

Be sure to click on the pictures to go to the recipe for each of these treats! Have you decided what you plan to create for Halloween this year? I am dying to hear your ideas so be sure to share them below!

Black tights, a black t-shirt, and cat ears are all you need to be a mysterious cat for the night. Use eye liner to add wiskers to complete your outfit!

Whether you're feeling mild, hot, or on fire, you can't go wrong with Taco Bell sauce! Just alter a big t-shirt and write a catchy phrase on it and you are good to go.

8. Marry Poppins

You can be everyone's favorite character with items that are already in your closet! Just wear a white button up with a shirt and add a cute little bow tie to finish your look. Carry around an umbrella so everyone know who you are!

7. Mini Mouse

You can't go wrong with being the ever so classic Mini Mouse. Wear a red skirt with a black blouse and black Disney ears for your outfit and use eye liner to add a black nose to you face and you are all set.

If you wear a completely brown outfit and add some "deery" makeup, you will be fighting off the hunters all night long.

5. A Pineapple

This summer was all about pineapples and citrus fruits! Relive those times with a simple yellow dress and a stem made from green paper!

4. 50 Shades of Gray

Pay tribute to your favorite book without breaking the bank. Collect paint samples in all shades of gray and attach them to a gray outfit for this fun costume!

3. Social Media

If you want to be tech savvy this Halloween then just be technology itself. Gather a group of friends and make t-shirts representing all of your favorite social medias.

2. Scarecrow

Take a cute spin on a traditional fall item. Pair your favorite plaid shirt with some skinny jeans and boots and add a few sunflowers to complete your outfit. Finish the costume off with cute scare crow makeup.

1. Starbucks

It has been said that the best crafts are made when you have coffee (Starbucks to be exact) but what if you are actually crafting Starbucks? A simple brown dress and white feather boa make this outfit simple and awesome!

Power Through the Mid-Semester Slump

I don’t know about you, but I’ve already had two midterms. School is finally in full swing. The excitement of bid day and seeing old friends has been replaced with the stress of midterms and the anxiety of turning in parts of my thesis. Usually at this point in the school year I find myself in a slump, though. The work is piling up with no break in sight. If you’re going through something similar, here are some tips to help you power through your mid-semester slump.
Give yourself and your sisters a boost out of the mid-semester slump. (photo)
  • Talk to your professors: Mid-semester is the perfect time to check in with each of your professors to see how you’re progressing in the class. You don’t want to get all the way to finals before you realize that your grades just aren’t where you want them. If you are struggling in a class, the professor can provide some tips on how to succeed in their class that might completely change how you are doing in the class.
  • Form study groups: If you read my last article (find it here) you hopefully made a few friends in each of your classes. Now is the perfect time to get these people together for study parties. If you tend to be a lone wolf when it comes to studying, mixing it up with a group study session every now and then can really help your grades improve. Even classes that involve a lot of papers can benefit from group work. When you have a group of people to work with, you will all hold each other accountable to actually getting the work done.
  • Realize that there is still time: If you’re grades aren’t where you want them to be, you still have an entire half of a semester. But make sure you are proactive about improving your grades. As don’t just fall out of the air. Meet with your professors, tutors, classmates, etc  or mix up your study routine. Don’t regret not working hard now when you’re struggling to get a passing grade at finals time.

How to Celebrate Fall with your Sisters

Happy fall!

One of my favorite things about fall is spending time with my sisters! Here are some of our favorite fall sisterhood activities!

1. Scream through a haunted house! You can hold them tight all night long! This could even lead into a sisterhood horror movie marathon and a sisterhood sleepover!

2. Carve pumpkins! Incorporate your letters or just add glitter - your options are limitless.

3. Go on a hayride! Even if you have to drive to find one, this is a great way to bond with sisters!

4. Make s'mores! If you can find a bonfire, you can make legit s'mores or you can settle for oven s'mores - whatever works.

5. Take a fall sisterhood photo shoot! Jumping in leaves, throwing leaves, running through falling leaves - adding leaves to any photos makes them more fun!

6. Play at the playground. Bring out your inner child at your local playground! Have a competition to see who can swing the highest. Winner gets coffee!!

I hope you have fun with your sisters this fall! Be sure to send us photos at sisterhoodredefined@gmail.com!
