What to Wear: Chapter Edition

Your sorority chapter meetings are like business meetings and most times you will need to dress accordingly. Personally, this is one of the things I love most about sorority life because it gives you a heads-up to what you'll be doing once you get into the real world. Here are some options for chapter attire that will pretty much fit a lot of people's wardrobe/personal style preference.

Chapter Wear: Pants

The first option is nice and simple. A nice pair of slacks can be dressed up so easily & a pants option is more convenient for the colder months of the school year. This is also a really neutral color scheme that anyone can get away with, it's not too bright or too dull.

This is another option with a neutral color scheme (I just find neutral colors to be more professional). The dress is just super cute and so easy to throw on when you don't really have much time to think about what to wear to chapter or when you're just entirely unsure. Adding a blazer to a dress can make it so professional! I mean, adding a blazer to anything can give it an entirely different look but especially with a dress like this, it's like a go-to chapter outfit.

Lastly, this is for those people who do love that pop of color but still want to keep it professional. Pencil skirts and a neutral top is the way to go! Pencil skirts can be professional/chapter attire when worn the right way. Make sure they're not too tight, & to pair it with some really cute shoes like the ones in the picture and you should be solid!

Which chapter outfit is your favorite?

How To Budget For Your New Sorority

When it comes to Greek life one of the biggest things that comes up is affording Greek life. I am not going to lie, it can get a bit expensive, but it's all about being conscious of how much money you have to spend and keeping to a strict budget. Here are some tips on keeping your budget together and how to budget for your new sorority.

1. Always budget a little more than you think you'll need: The sticker price of your new sorority might not be the only charges you face. You might want to go to a semi-formal or a pageant; you might want that extra shirt you never thought you'd want. Also some fees just pop up that you never thought you would have to handle. Make sure you are always prepared for more.

2. Learn to say no: If you can't afford an event and you don't have to go don't be afraid to say no. If you can't afford that shirt that isn't mandatory you don't have to sign up for it. Being in a sorority shouldn't break the bank so if you don't have to sign up for something and you don't want to sign up for it, don't.

3. Check for national and local resources: A lot of sororities offer a ton of resources for members in the form of great scholarships for dues. Also a lot of local sorority councils might offer a scholarship to the new member of the year or other people so that they can pay their dues. With paying your dues every little bit counts so if you can find a great scholarship it might make affording sorority life easier. Some sororities also have special consideration opportunities for those in the chapter who can't afford the whole of their dues.

4. Adjust your lifestyle: If you eat out a lot, cut back on going out. Eating in saves a lot of money and don't forget to use your meal plan if you have one. Instead of eating off campus every night, be sure to actually use the meal plan that you have. This also goes back to learning to say no, if your sisters want to eat off campus and you can't afford it, it's okay to say I'd rather stay on campus today.

5. Remember that sororities cost: When you join a sorority you are committing to every part of that sorority, even the boring parts like paying dues. Paying your dues in full and on time is important to the existence of your sorority. Sororities are expensive to run; especially when you are dealing with a sorority with a national organization. When your sorority has a national organization you have those bills and then you also have a ton of local dues that go to things like t-shirts, important events thrown by your chapter, and keeping your chapter afloat. There are many ways to make a sorority more afforadable, but in the end you also have to realize this is what you signed up for when you signed your bid card.

I hope this was helpful for you. If you have any other ideas on budgeting for new sorority women please leave them in the comments below!

DIY Painted Mason Jars

This DIY project happens to be such an easy and fun craft! What is so great about it is that it's very quick to accomplish and doesn't require a lot of supplies.  I picked up these acrylic pants at a local craft store for no more than .99 and the mason jars came from the dollar store.  As you can see you can dress them up or down to your liking.  I chose red and yellow as the colors for this particular craft because those happen to be the color of my sorority, Chi Omega.

In the past I have made other jars and have put flowers in them.  They look so pretty on a window sill.  However if you like you can also use it to hold your pens, pencils or even make up brushes! Another great idea would be making this for your big or little and stuff it with candy and who doesn't love candy?

If you happen to make this for yourself or a gift be sure to tweet us a photo!

How to Cope with a Terrible Schedule

It happens to the best of us...

We get excited to register for class and have the perfect schedule and then... Bam! The class is full before you even get a chance to sign up.

You wind up with 8 AM Chemistry followed by 9 AM Calculus and so on.

You have a terrible schedule and you just do not know how you will deal with it! Take it from us, it is do-able! [after 3 semesters of 8 AMs, I know what I am talking about] With these few tips you can survive the "semester schedule from Hell"

Tip 1: Take a deep breath and tell yourself it is going to be fine!

Tip 2: Create a rewards program for yourself! Each week you survive, treat yourself to a mini shopping spree or nice dinner!

Tip 3: Write out all your classes in an agenda and take note of all the free time you have! Take advantage of this free time by working out, meeting friends, or even catching up on some reading. You will soon feel grateful for the free time you have!

Tip 4: Find a person, notebook, wall that will listen to you complain. Then, take a few moments to just get all your complaints out. Having a few minutes of "pity-me" time can do wonders. Just make sure to limit your self pity to one thirty minute session a week and then follow with a self motivating session!

Tip 5: Remember, it is only 5 months and then you have a whole new schedule!

We promise that following these steps will help you cope with your schedule and if you need a little more help, just refer yourself to Ben & Jerry's Cookie Dough Ice Cream!

Beyond the Norts

Welcome back to school everyone! I know that for me one of the most exhausting things to me is picking out my outfit in the morning. I really try to avoid the norts and over-sized t-shirt concept and it helps my school work a lot because I'm just a little bit more focused and a little bit more eager to learn but I hate that I often lose the comfort aspect. I have compiled a list of outfit ideas that are just as easy to through on as norts and t-shirts and are just as comfortable!

Outfit 1: A tshirt dress and slip on sandals

A t-shirt dress is just like an over-sized t-shirt but you don't have to wear pants with it! A great thing about this outfit is you can dress it up or down depending on your needs. Add a statement necklace and you are ready for a dinner out with the girls or a special guy and with a denim jacket you are ready to run errands around town.

The dress pictured above is perfect for a college girls budget at $20 from Target.

Outfit 2: Flowy shorts and a v-neck

These shorts are almost more comfy than norts and they look way more pulled together. With a v-neck this is a casual yet pulled together look. If v-necks aren't your thing, try the shorts with a crop top for a more edgy look.

The shorts pictured above are a great addition to your wardrobe. If you are cold with either outfits, opt for cardigans or flowing kimonos for warmth or even swap the flowy shorts for plazzo pants.

Do you have any outfit ideas to keep your mornings simple? Let us know in the comments!

How to Organize Your Planner

The first day of classes is vastly approaching, for some people classes may have already started. With a new school year in gear, it's important to stay organized and the tool I use most to keep organized is my planner! Here are my tips & tricks to using your planner efficiently!
Organizing Planner Pic

Start with a to-do list on a sticky note, random piece of paper, whatever. I find it easier to put assignments on a to-do list and then in the weekly section of my planner, I write the assignment down on the day I want to complete it and again on the day it is due.

I use a color coding system that is really simple:
Due Dates
Sorority Events
And then I use a blue or black pen to write down everything else.
I find using a color code system is really helpful if you keep it simple like this. I tried using multiple colors and it just confused me but do what works for you!

Make it Fun! If your planner is colorful and fun to look at you'll be drawn to use it more. This year I bought my first Lilly Planner (the one in the picture above!) & I am absolutely in love with it. Use stickers (Lilly has some Greek themed planner stickers), washi tape, the whole nine. Like I said, the colors will make using your planner more appealing.

What planner did you get this year? How do you organize it?

My Sorority Story: Dealing with Rejection During Recruitment

As a first generation Panhellenic sorority hopeful who decided to go through recruitment super late in the semester I was at an extreme disadvantage. I had one sorority I was really looking into but before I could scream hip hip horray at bid day I had to get through three days of recruitment. To say I was nervous would be an understatement.

I had no idea what to expect during recruitment. My Pi Chi was helpful as she walked all of us through the days. We had Spring Formal Recruitment though so that meant that a lot of people had a whole semester to get to know sorority women, while I only had two friends who were Greek.

I had stumbled through my first day in a shamble of nervousness and I had inadvertently shut out a lot of the sororities with my conversation and nerves as I opened my schedule for the second day to see the only sorority that had invited me back was the sorority I'd made the friends in to begin with.

Although my heart belonged to that sorority I was still upset. I felt a pang of hurt in my stomach and I almost started to cry. I remember that day very well. It wasn't a bad thing--I still had my top choice, but it was hard to understand why I didn't get invited back to the other four houses on campus.

My first bid day!

In the end it's about picking up the pieces and moving on. It's okay to cry a bit, but don't go into a mass hysteria. Don't spend your entire recruitment wondering about what could have, should have, or would have been. In recruitment all you have is the present, the current schedule, the women who invited you back.

If you are rejected during recruitment I have two pieces of advice for you:

1. Continue On: Even if you decide to not sign a bid card at the end of recruitment, continue on with any sorority who invites you back until you have no more parties to go to. They invited you back for a reason so you should always hear what they have to say.

2. You Are Not Alone: Even if it seems like you are the only one who got rejected during recruitment, you aren't. Part of recruitment is the narrowing down of houses until you find your perfect house. If your list didn't get shorter and shorter with every day recruitment wouldn't work. No one has a perfect recruitment, not even the sorority women have perfect recruitments.

Sorority women get rejected as much if not more than the actual potential new members themselves. As a person who has been on both sides of recruitment I know how devastating it can be to a sorority woman when her recruitment crush doesn't come back into the room--we notice too.

Everyone gets that feeling of rejection, it's what you do after you get that feeling that matters.

A Girl in a Boys' World

One of my favorite things about being in a sorority is the sisterhood among all the women in the house. It’s not often that you can put 100 girls in one room and see so much happiness and love. In school, however, I face a very different reality. As a mathematics and economics double major I am surrounded mostly by boys. Sure, there are some other girls in my classes, but the majority of my classmates are boys. In my Econometrics class of 17 students, only 4 of them were girls. Going from a house of 100% girls to a class of less than 25% girls is quite the switch for me. Sometimes this is a struggle, but being in a sorority has prepared me to excel in the classroom.

Every day, my sisters remind me of my true worth and value through their words and actions. From compliments on my outfit to choosing me for leadership positions, my sisters have helped me to build up my confidence. This strong confidence enables me to speak up in class even when I fear looking stupid as one of only a handful of girls in a classroom full of boys. I get so much more out of my classes when I actively participate, so having the confidence to raise my hand has invaluable long-term effects for me.

Have you ever tried to make 100 unique and strong-headed girls agree on something? I bet you have if you’ve ever been in a sorority. Working in groups is not always easy, but it is often essential. Group projects have come up in many of my classes, but I feel better able to tackle the hurdles as a member of a sorority. I know when to take charge and when to step back. I also know how to listen to a variety of options as well as how to delegate tasks. These skills are preparing me for a very successful future where I will most definitely have to work in more groups.

When freshman year rolled around I was beyond nervous about going through sorority recruitment, but I have never regretted it since day one. Similarly, I am extremely nervous about entering the male-dominated economics field. But I now have the courage to take the leap. I don’t know where my career will lead, but I do know that I would regret never at least trying. Who knows, I could even be the first female economist to win the Nobel Prize in economics. Being a member of a sorority has helped me to realize my true potential. I’m not about to limit myself just because there’s a few more boys in the room.

Does anyone else plan on entering a male-dominated field after college? Do you ever get nervous?

Transition from Summer to School Smoothly

Summer is winding down and it’s (unfortunately) time to get back into the academic flow. It’s beyond exciting to get back to campus and see all of my friends who have scattered across the US this summer, but it can be especially difficult to transition if you’re like me and spent the summer babysitting one of the world’s cutest families instead of a 9-5 internship or job like I have every other summer. When it comes time to transition from summer fun to school drudgery, I need a definite system to keep myself on track.

Probably my favorite back-to-school organizational tool is my dry erase calendar. It’s perfect for my very Type A personality and without it I absolutely would be a disorganized mess. At the beginning of each semester, I grudgingly print out the last page of every syllabus: the assignment list. I set up my month by using my vast array of markers to assign each class, work, DZ, and other things like university events (aka football games, Go Bucks!) a color and mark the assignments accordingly. If I have an extra important assignment like a midterm, I border the entire box so that date is heavily outlined and when I look at my calendar from afar I can clearly see when it’s appropriate to start panicking.

It's actually become infamous among my friends
Another great way to stay organized is to hang each assignment list somewhere in your room. As the weeks go on highlight the assignments you’ve already completed. I think highlighting is a better alternative than crossing out assignments because you can still read what the assignment was in case you need the dates or anything later on. It’s a really easy way to look at your month week by week to ensure you don’t miss anything important.

I do carry a planner around but since my assignments are pretty spread out, the week-to-week setup of a planner isn’t very helpful and the monthly calendar is so small it would be impossible to fit five or six classes worth of info in those tiny boxes. While I depended on my planner in high school to get by, four years later it’s not such a helpful utensil for me. But my roommate lives by her planner, so it can also be used as a really helpful tool to keep you organized and have a monthly assignment list with a week-by-week breakdown. The same way I use different colored markers on my calendar, I’d suggest different colored pens for your planner just so every assignment doesn’t blend together.

This is probably the most I ended up using my planner… #priorities
One last really easy trick I use to keep my life organized? Since I always have my computer with me (most of my classes run on PowerPoint presentations) I saved my syllabi to my desktop and keep them all in the same place. Next to them I have the document outlining my graduation requirements for quick reference. So when I’m on campus and far from my insane calendar, I have an easy way to find my assignments, even when the wifi decides to kick everyone off the network.

I hope this helps keep your life in order as you switch from summer to school mode, good luck!

Recruitment Week Necessities

Some would say spirit week and recruitment week are two of the most stressful weeks of the sorority calendar. I would have to say those people are wrong if you make sure you have everything you need in your bag to face any challenge you may come across. I have compiled the top 10 things you HAVE to have in your recruitment bag.
  • A Small Beauty Pack
    • Coffee Filters: Great for blotting shiny noses
    • Hairspray: Holds make up and hair as well as keeps undergarments from moving
    • Chapstick: Helps eliminate dry lips and you can dab it on knicks to make them stop stinging
    • Your Standard Makeup: Touch up in between parties
  • A Nail Kit: Cuts loose threads, hang nails, tweezers to help with eyebrows and any other minor problems
  • A Wristlet: If you are running to print off lists for the recruitment chair you don't want your whole tote
  • Headphones: In case you need a few minutes of me time

  • Lifesavers: Will help you get fresh breath in a pinch and can also give you a sugar pickup if  needed.
    • Starbucks Vias: Caffeine in 2 minutes or less
    • A Recruitment Binder
      • Your new member book: Brush up on your facts when you have a minute to spare
      • An itinerary: It's awesome to be the one who knows what time parties are starting.
      • An encouraging note or set of quotes: For when you get a girl who just gets your mood down and need a pick me up. This is also useful when you get stressed with your sisters to help remind you why you joined.
      • Paper for when you need to take notes about PNMs or other tips your Recruitment Chair gives you
    • A First Aid Kit: Band-Aids and Tylenol. There will always be someone who needs both.
    • A Small Snack: Low blood sugar and an empty stomach will make recruitment miserable so avoid this if possible.
    • Hand Sanitizer: You will shake so many hands this week, it's not worth getting sick.

With these (inexpensive) useful things, your recruitment week should go off without a hitch! Good luck recruiting and remember that the lack of sleep and blistered feet are for the amazing new members you get at the end of the week!

    What To Wear To Recruitment

Thinking about recruitment is here! It's finally here! I'm so excited to welcome new members.  I know that schools do their recruitment process differently so I have made outfits based on what my school does. Unfortunately my school does not have houses therefore we don't have a "house tour" round.  As you can tell from the outfits they get fancier by the day.

Black Scalloped Shorts // Denim Chambray Shirt  // Jack Rogers //  Earrings

The Open House round is just the first step in the whole process.  It's very exciting! Don't be nervous by any means.  Go in with an open mind and listen to what every sorority has to say.  As you meet girls from each chapter they will briefly but efficiently explain who they are and what they stand for.

Dress // Shoes // Nail Polish // Bag // How To: Hair

After a full day of meeting every sorority your list has dwindled down to a few.  In the Philanthropy Round you will learn in greater detail what the particular sorority values and supports.  This round may be meaningful for you in which you have that "ah ha!" moment and see this is where you see yourself.

    Dress // Necklace // Bag // Shoes

You're almost there! Yes after many busy days of meeting many wonderful women you probably have in mind where you want to be.  Still, although you may have your head set on one sorority, still remember to keep your opinions of others open.  Preference round can be more intimate where you are given longer amount of times with these group of women.

    Shirt // Jeans // Shoes

You did it!!! You have a home! Bid Day is SUCH an exiting day.  After you've opened your bid you get to run home to new beautiful sisters.  This round is the most relax dressed day.  Usually your given  sorority will give you T-shirts so having a shirt that you can slip off quickly would be a great thing to wear.

Congrats on your new sorority! I'm so excited for your newest adventure.

Send us pictures of your outfits during your recruitment to our twitter account! @SisRedefined

How to Furnish and Decorate Your First Apartment on a Budget

If it is your first year living in an apartment then you are probably stressing out about how you are going to furnish and decorate your apartment with the small amount of money you made at your summer job. There is a way to completely furnish and decorate your apartment on a budget.

The first thing you need to do is set your budget. This varies per person based on whether you are renting a semi-furnished or non-furnished apartment.

After you set your budget compile a list of needs and a list of wants. Make sure you bring these lists with you when you begin shopping to keep yourself in check. Yes, the $25 dollar chevron jars are adorable, no, you do not need them!

Now it is time to head out shopping. The first things you should buy would be the bigger items. Couches, beds, desks, tables, and chairs will take the biggest chunks out of your budget.

Ikea is a great place to shop for the items you think you should buy new. You can get get couches and beds at Ikea for under $400

If you are okay with having a used couch in your apartment, check Craigslist, Goodwill or yard sales for items that have been gently used.

I found this piece of furniture sitting by the trash can at out local trash dump. It cost me nothing but a little work to wash it and paint it white. I added a seat to the top and now it is a unique storage ottoman.
After you get the bigger purchases out of the way, I suggest returning to Goodwill or Salvation Army to browse the home sections for both useful and decorative items. It is not unlikely that you will find a table for under $5 that you can sand and paint to make it appear brand new. You can also pick up cheap appliances, (think blenders, waffle irons, etc), bake-ware, pots and pans, plates and bowls, and glasses for great prices.

Other needs such as cleaning supplies and bath towels can often be picked up in bulk from places like Costco or can be bought cheap from Walmart, Target, and dollar stores.

After you have bought all the items on your needs list, you can move on to your wants list. You probably have decorative items on this list.

First begin by picking your decorative theme and reminding yourself to stick to that theme. If it helps, create a Pinterest board dedicated to decorating your first apartment. You can often find cheap DIY ideas on Pinterest to make the place your own.

Thrift stores, Goodwill, and Salvation Army often have picture frames, vases, and knick-knacks that can bring your personality to your space. Often you can find vintage items that are really interesting and will surely be unique.

You can also scour yard sales to pick up wall art and more knick-knacks. Remember that a can of spray paint can go a long way with older items!

Once you have a good bit of decorative items, focus on the remaining items you want. Decide which of these you really want and purchase a few of them. If you are looking for wall quotes, Dollar Tree often has removable wall stickers. It is always nice to treat yourself to at least a few new items. Be sure to check out your local TJ Maxx and Ross home sections, as you can often find nice rugs or candles for next to nothing. If you shop end of season sales at Hobby Lobby or Jo Ann, you are very likely to pick up some cute items for mere dollars (think dish towels, jars, etc.).

Remember that while it is nice to treat yourself to a few nice, new items, it doesn't have to break the bank!

Good luck decorating your first apartment! If you have any other tips, feel free to leave them in the comments below!

Amanda is a senior at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas where she studies Sociology and minors in Anthropology. Amanda is a sister and housing chair for her sorority Sigma Sigma Sigma. When Amanda is not busy on campus with her sorority or being an Ambassador for the university Amanda can be found at home doing what she loves best--blogging or shopping. Amanda is a self-proclaimed bow addict and an Etsy-holic.

Beth J. - Outreach and Recruitment // Contributor

Beth is a Sophomore transfer at Georgia Southern University. She spends her time split between the biology and psychology departments as she pursues her undergrad degree in both subjects. She spends her free time working and volunteering with children with special needs. She has learned the importance of philanthropy through her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta, and enjoys participating in these events, especially the charity 5Ks! When Beth has free time she likes to practice yoga or relax by reading a book. You can often find her wandering aimlessly through the rows of Hobby Lobby or scouring Pinterest looking project ideas.

    Bonnie P. - Contributor

Bonnie is a Senior at THE Ohio State University. She is a New York transplant in the middle of an agricultural state with a never-ending stream of questions, a sister of Delta Zeta, and an avid New York Rangers fan. She gets far too invested in the books she is constantly reading, and even though she lives in yoga pants, her idea of a workout is walking around Bloomingdales. Ben Affleck is her ultimate celeb crush but (short-haired) James Maslow definitely gives him a run for his money. Swoon.

    Laurencia P. - Contributor

Laurencia is a junior at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. She is a proud sister of Alpha Sigma Tau and is studying Psychology with the goal of becoming a Child and Family Counselor. . When she is not busy trying to keep her life entirely organized, Laurencia can be found reading, writing, or taking selfies! She has a slight obsession with Frank Ocean and Beyonce and has no intentions of giving up those obsessions any time soon.

    Melissa M. - Contributor

Melissa a senior at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. But more importantly she is a member of the Delta Iota Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta! When she isn't watching Dance Moms with her sisters in the living room or going on Michael's binges during Big Appreciation Week, you can find her on the water with her rowing team. Between sorority life, rowing, and studying for her math and economics double major it's a wonder she gets any sleep...and most of the time she doesn't get nearly enough. She is so excited to be a part of Sisterhood Redefined, even if it will cut into her precious sleep time.

Sonia W. - Social Media and Marketing // Contributor

Sonia is a Junior at Georgia Southern University where she studies Marketing, Economics and Spanish. She is a social media junkie so follow her on Twitter and Pinterest (@soniawade623) for constant entertainment. Sonia woks hard to do a little bit of everything in her sorority, Delta Phi Epsilon so is always a little busy and really uses music as her outlet - her tastes are quite eccentric though.   If you don't see her with paint on her legs (she loves painting coolers) or coffee in her hands (she's surpassed the Starbucks Gold Membership and has a Starbucks black card), alert the media!

Stephanie L. - Web Design and Graphics // Contributor

Stephanie is a Sophomore at Quinnipiac University studying Broadcast Journalism with hopes of living our her dreams in a big city.  She is also a proud founding sister of Chi Omega at her school.  If Stephanie isn’t catching up on the latest Real Housewives, Greys Anatomy, or Bachelorette show she is most definitely catching up with her friends at a coffee shop.  Saying she has an addiction to coffee could possibly be an understatement!
